Mahadevan Ki Chhaya Mein

Mahadevan Ki Chhaya Mein

Thrissur ka temple festival season aisa hota hai jaise poora shehar ek hi dhun pe chal raha ho. Subah se nagaras ki thap-thap, chenda ka dumdaar beat, jasmine aur coconut oil ki khushboo, aur har corner pe rang-birange flags—sab milke ek alag hi duniya bana dete hain. Temple courtyard mein diya ki roshni abhi bhi halki si thi, par activity full on peak thi. Mahadevan, woh shaandar elephant, apne decorated headgear ke saath bilkul statue jaisa khada tha, jaise usko pata ho ki aaj usi ke naam pe sabki izzat aur ego dono tikne wale hain.

Suresh, 48, temple festival committee ka old-school senior member, subah se hi apne clipboard ke saath idhar-udhar ghoom raha tha. Uska posture bhi aisa tha jaise procession ka route uske dimag mein nahi, uski spine mein likha ho. “Adi, left side barricade aur tight karo. Crowd ko aise mat chhodo, yeh mela nahi hai,” usne bina dekhe bola.

Adi, 22 ka college-going bhatija, phone ek haath mein aur walkie-talkie doosre mein liye khada tha. “Uncle, barricade tight hai. Bas aapka mood thoda loose ho jaye toh aur accha rahega,” usne half-smile ke saath bola.

Suresh ne uski taraf aise dekha jaise yeh joke nahi, committee ka crime ho. “Zubaan sambhal ke. Festival mein smartness dikhane ka time nahi hota.”

Adi ne aankh ghumayi. “Aur sirf age dikhane ka bhi nahi hota, uncle.”

Ye daily routine tha. Temple courtyard mein meeting, donation counting, route checking, aur beech-beech mein dono ki chhoti-chhoti nok-jhok. Bahar se lagta tha jaise bas work pressure hai, par sach yeh tha ki dono elephant procession ki leadership apne naam karwana chahte the. Suresh ko lagta tha uski decades ki service bina respect ke side mein kar di jaayegi. Adi ko lagta tha ki log usko bas “young ladka” samajhkar under-estimate kar rahe hain.

Lakshmi Amma, 67, temple kitchen ke paas wooden stool pe baithi donation registers dekh rahi thi. Unka chehra calm tha, par aankhen sab kuch note kar rahi thi. Woh kam bolti thi, lekin jab bolti thi toh seedha point pe. “Dono ka gussa theek hai,” unhone dheere se kaha, “par kaam gusse se nahi, dhyan se hota hai.”

Suresh ne unki baat sun li, par react nahi kiya. Adi ne bas phone pocket mein daala aur kitchen ki taraf dekh ke bola, “Amma, aap hi bol do na, inko ki main serious hoon.”

Lakshmi Amma ne bina muskuraye kaha, “Serious log shout nahi karte, Adi. Kaam se dikhte hain.”

Adi ko thoda laga, par usne ignore kar diya. Uska mood waise hi tight tha.

Usi din shaam ke pehle, jab donation counting chal rahi thi, ek chhota sa chaos ho gaya. Important donation box, jisme cash ke saath receipts aur donor notes bhi the, woh missing tha. Pehle sabko laga shayad kisi ne storage room mein rakh diya hoga. Phir do jagah check hua. Phir teen. Phir tension ka level seedha festival lights se bhi upar chala gaya.

“Box kahan hai?” Suresh ki awaaz temple courtyard mein kaafi tez sunayi di. “Aise kaise missing ho gaya? Yeh koi toy nahi hai.”

Adi turant palat gaya. “Mujhse mat bolo. Aapke old system mein security ka naam hi nahi hai. Do log aur laga dete, CCTV side mein lagwa dete—”

“Bas!” Suresh ne ungli uthayi. “Casual handling tumhari hai. Phone pe laga rehta hai, aur responsibility ka lecture deta hai.”

Committee ke kuch aur members bhi aa gaye. Kisi ne bol diya ki box last time Adi ke volunteer desk ke paas dekha gaya tha. Kisi ne Suresh ke route planning pe question uthaya. Kisi ne whisper mein yeh bhi keh diya ki festival ka reputation khatre mein hai. Temple ke andar jo pehle incense aur flowers ki meethi smell thi, ab tension aur suspicion se bhari lag rahi thi.

Pradeep, 35, jo donation collection ka coordinator tha, turant aage aaya. Uska shirt crisp tha, smile polished thi, aur voice mein woh fake reassurance jaisi warmth thi jo crisis mein logon ko achchi lagti hai. “Arre, panic mat karo. Box mil jayega. Main dekh raha hoon na. Ho sakta hai kisi ne safe jagah shift kiya ho.”

Suresh ne uski taraf dekha. “Shift kiya ho ya shift karwaya gaya ho?”

Pradeep hansi ke saath bola, “Aap bhi na, Suresh ji. Har baat mein suspicion.”

Adi ko Pradeep ka tone thoda zyada smooth laga, par us waqt kisi ke paas time nahi tha. Committee ne decide kiya ki sab log storage aur temple grounds ko dobara check karein. Procession leadership ka decision bhi postpone ho gaya. Yeh delay dono ke ego pe aur tel daal gaya.

Raat ko festival ground thoda quiet ho gaya. Lights dim thi, sirf lamp posts aur temple ke golden glow mein courtyard chamak raha tha. Mahadevan apne enclosure mein calmly khada tha, jaise human drama se uska koi lena-dena hi na ho. Uski aankhon mein ek ajeeb si serenity thi. Suresh akela storage area ke paas aaya, kyunki usko lag raha tha ki koi detail miss ho rahi hai. Thodi der baad Adi bhi udhar hi aa gaya, apne phone ki torch on karke.

Dono ne ek doosre ko dekha aur dono hi ek second ke liye chup ho gaye.

“Tum yahan kya kar rahe ho?” Suresh ne poocha.

“Jo aap kar rahe ho, uncle—same thing. Box dhoondh raha hoon,” Adi ne jawab diya. “Aur haan, mujhe lecture mat dena. Abhi mood nahi hai.”

Suresh ne sigh kiya. “Mood ka kya karna. Kaam karna hai.”

Adi ne storage room ke floor pe nazar ghumayi. Wahan ek corner mein mud ke nishaan the, jaise koi heavy cheez drag ki gayi ho. Usne turant bola, “Yeh dekho. Yeh normal footprint nahi hai.”

Suresh ne flashlight li aur closely dekha. “Hmm. Aur yeh side mein dust hata hua hai. Kisi ne box ko yahan se move kiya hai.”
