Midnight Chai Low Battery High Tension

Midnight Chai Low Battery High Tension

Bengaluru ka startup scene waise hi thoda sa fever dream hota hai—kabhi pitch deck, kabhi product bug, kabhi investor call, aur kabhi bas ye confusion ki aaj ka din khatam bhi hoga ya nahi. Office ke glass walls par lights raat ko bhi jalti rehti thi, jaise building ko bhi sleep optional laga ho. Ananya Mehra ko ye setup suit karta tha, ya kam se kam logon ko aisa lagta tha. 29 saal ki founder-boss, always crisp shirts, clean bun, sharp replies, aur ek aisa expression jo dekh ke intern bhi apne aap ko “sir” bolne lagta tha.

Par jo koi usse thoda dhyaan se dekhta, especially jab office khaali ho jata, samajh sakta tha ki uski strictness ke neeche ek aur version bhi tha. Wahi version jo midnight ke baad terrace pe jaake chai peeta tha, bina kisi deck, bina kisi call, bina kisi “quick sync.” Wahan woh Ananya nahi hoti thi jo board meeting mein “let’s align on the north star” bolti thi. Wahan bas ek thaki hui ladki hoti thi jo raat ke sannate mein saans lena chahti thi.

Kabir Sinha ko startup mein join kiye abhi do hafte hue the. Product team mein tha, 27 ka, calm face, thoda sa sarcastic, aur itna observant ki log usse “quiet” samajh kar galti kar dete. Woh show-off type nahi tha. Na hi har baat pe “bro, I have a framework” wala banda. Kaam karta, time pe karta, aur baat tab karta jab zaroorat ho. Isliye team ko woh pehle hi week mein pasand aa gaya tha. Bas problem ye thi ki office mein jo bhi cheez jaldi pasand aa jaye, uske around gossip bhi utni hi jaldi start ho jati hai.

Us raat bhi usual chaos tha. Deadline next morning thi, design team ka final mockup abhi bhi “almost done” ke stage mein tha, aur operations lead Nitin bhaiya—jo har cheez mein apni naak ghusedne ka talent rakhte the—har half hour mein pooch rahe the, “Guys, status?” Designer Mahi apne laptop par meme post kar rahi thi: When the deck is due in 2 hours and you discover a typo in slide 17. Office mein hansi bhi thi, stress bhi, aur coffee machine ke saamne line bhi.

Kabir ko ek bug fix ke liye terrace side se guzarna pada. Usne dekha, balcony ke kone mein ek steel kettle, do paper cups, aur Ananya khadi thi, phone silent mode pe, shoulders thode loose. Woh kisi meeting mode mein nahi thi. Bas chai ka steam dekh rahi thi, jaise usmein saara din dissolve ho sakta ho. Kabir ne ek second rukke bina nahi reh paaya.

“Boss, yeh secret level hai kya?” usne halka sa bola, “Midnight chai unlock karne ke liye special access chahiye?”

Ananya ne pehle uski taraf dekha, phir uss almost-smile ke saath boli, “Tum yahan kaise?”

“Bug fix ke liye nikla tha. Abhi tak office ka map fully samajh nahi aaya, so I followed the aroma.”

“Aroma?” Ananya ne eyebrow raise ki.

“Plain coffee se zyada dignified lag raha tha,” Kabir ne kaha. “Can I join, or yeh founder-only ritual hai?”

Ananya ne ek cup uski taraf badha diya. “Join kar lo. But no startup wisdom at this hour.”

“Deal,” Kabir bola, aur dono terrace ki railing ke paas khade ho gaye.

Pehli chai mein baat kaafi formal rahi. Work, team, Bengaluru traffic, aur yeh ki office ka AC itna unpredictable kyun hai. Phir dheere-dheere baat badli. Kabir ne casually bola, “Yahan log ‘rapidly iterate’ bolke bas panic karte hain kya?”

Ananya ne has kar kaha, “Welcome to startup life.”

“Delhi mein bhi hota hai,” Kabir ne shoulder shrug kiya, “bas wahan log traffic ko blame karte hain. Yahan product ko.”

Us raat pehli baar Ananya ko kisi ne founder ke title se pehle insaan ki tarah treat kiya. Kabir ne usse na toh impress karne ki koshish ki, na hi usse darne ki. Bas baat ki. Normal. Easy. Jaise uske upar koi spotlight nahi, koi hierarchy nahi.

Uske baad midnight chai routine ban gaya. Kabhi Ananya pehle terrace pe hoti, kabhi Kabir bug fix ke bahane aa jata. Kabhi dono bina bole chai peete, kabhi Bengaluru traffic ko curse karte, kabhi startup jargon ka mazaak udate. “Synergy” word pe dono ka mutual hatred develop ho gaya. “Circle back” sunte hi Ananya ka eye-roll aur Kabir ka deadpan “please don’t” almost synchronise ho gaya.

Ek raat Kabir ne poocha, “Tum hamesha itni controlled kyun lagti ho?”

Ananya ne cup ko thoda rotate kiya. “Because if I don’t look controlled, nobody will take me seriously.”

Kabir ne uski taraf dekha, phir bahut casually bola, “That’s a very expensive way to live.”

Ananya uss line pe hans bhi nahi paayi, bas quietly usse dekhte reh gayi. Usne kabhi kisi ko itni asaani se uske defense ke paar aate nahi dekha tha. Kabir ke saamne woh boss ban ke hide nahi kar pa rahi thi, aur ye cheez usse thodi scary bhi lagti thi, thodi achhi bhi.

Phir Rhea Kapoor entry maari, full background score ke saath. School friend, PR/brand consulting mein, aur uski life ka woh insaan jo hamesha kehta tha, “Main bas help kar rahi hoon,” jabki actually saari arrangement uske haath mein hoti thi. Woh Bengaluru ek client meeting ke bahane aayi aur seedha office lobby mein “surprise” ho gayi.

“Anu!” Rhea ne hug diya. “Yaar, tu toh bilkul founder wali energy mein aa gayi hai. Scary, but hot.”

Ananya ne aankh ghumaayi. “Tum yahan kaise?”

“Client meeting. But more importantly, tum mujhe update kyun nahi deti?” Rhea ki nazar phir Kabir pe gayi jo reception side se aa raha tha. “Oh. Interesting.”

Kabir ne politely nod kiya. “Hi.”

Rhea ki smile thodi zyada bright ho gayi. “Kabir Sinha. Haan, I know you.”

Ananya blink ki. “Tum dono kaise jaante ho?”

Rhea ne innocent face banaya. “Friend’s friend connection. Small world, babe.”

Kabir ne bhi thoda confused hoke kaha, “Haan, ek mutual through someone. Very weak six degrees of separation situation.”
