Office Crush
Aarav Malhotra ko Monday morning se hi Mondays se nafrat thi, but is Monday ne toh personal level pe uska mood kharab kar diya tha. Gurgaon ke us mid-size IT consulting office me woh apne window-side cubicle ke saath emotionally attached ho chuka tha, jaise woh seat nahi, ek chhota sa safe zone ho. Window se thodi dhoop aati thi, neeche traffic ka blur dikhta tha, aur coffee mug ko dekh ke lagta tha ki life manageable hai.
Phir Shalini Kapoor ne ek email bhej diya: “Cubicle reallocation due to team alignment.” Aarav ne bas itna padha aur aankh band karke backrest pe head tikka diya. Office me “alignment” ka matlab usually hota tha kisi ki peace ka end.
Do minute baad woh apna keyboard uthaye, monitor reset kare, aur bag kandhe pe latkaye naye seat ki taraf chal raha tha. Open office ke middle section ke paas se guzarte hue Kabir Mehta ne usko dekha aur apni chair ghuma ke bola, “Arre Malhotra, promotion nahi mila kya? Itni jaldi moving up?”
Aarav ne bina smile ke kaha, “Shifting seats is not moving up, Kabir.”
Kabir hansa. “Same thing in corporate language. Chalo, new beginnings.”
Aarav ne bas ek dry look diya aur apni nayi jagah pe pahunch gaya. Usne chair ko align kiya, monitor plug kiya, aur phir samne dekha.
Aur wahi freeze ho gaya.
Uske saamne wale cubicle me Meera Sethi baithi thi.
Meera, jo hamesha entry gate ke paas hoti thi, jahan se office me aane wale har insan ko ek quick scan ke saath mentally category kar deti thi. Meera, jo fast talk karti thi, sabko handle kar leti thi, aur jiske face pe hamesha aisa expression rehta tha jaise usne already teen meetings mein logon ko outsmart kar diya ho. Aaj woh apne table pe laptop khol rahi thi, hair loosely tied, aur ek pen ko ungliyon me ghuma rahi thi.
Usne Aarav ko dekha. “Oh. You’re my new neighbor.”
Aarav ne thoda awkward sa nod kiya. “Looks like it.”
“Okay,” Meera said, lips pe halka sa smile. “At least ab main apne boring day me kisi ko silently judge kar sakungi.”
Aarav ne blink kiya. “That sounds… encouraging?”
“Depends on your performance.”
Woh bola kuch nahi, par uske kaan thode warm ho gaye. Meera already apna laptop khol ke kaam me lag gayi thi, jaise usne bas ek normal office exchange kiya ho. Aarav ne apni spreadsheet open ki, but numbers se zyada usko samne wali seat ka presence disturb kar raha tha.
Pehle din usne khud ko convince kiya ki yeh bas cubicle change hai. Practical. Temporary. No big deal. Lekin office life me “no big deal” bhi kabhi-kabhi bahut big deal ban jata hai.
---
Agle kuch dino me unki interaction ka pattern set ho gaya. Subah printer pe ek hi waqt pahunchna. Coffee machine pe awkward waiting. Kabhi Meera ka “Aarav, yeh file forward kar doge?” aur kabhi Aarav ka “Yeh number galat lag raha hai, ek baar check kar lo.” Bas itna hi.
Par itna hi kaafi tha.
Meera ki speed dekh kar lagta tha uska dimaag hamesha do kadam aage chal raha hai. Woh kisi se bhi baat kar le, kisi bhi client ko handle kar le, aur phir bhi uski aankhon me ek thakaan chhupi hoti thi, jo sirf tab dikhti jab woh screen se nazar hata kar ek second ke liye khaali space ko dekhti. Aarav, jo usually quiet observer tha, yeh sab notice kar leta tha.
Aur Meera ko bhi Aarav ke baare me ek weird realization hua tha.
Woh boring nahi tha. Woh bas loud nahi tha.
Jab Kabir kisi meeting ke baad open office me haanste hue aata aur bolta, “Aaj client ne toh meri poetry appreciate kar li,” toh Meera usko eye-roll deti. Aarav usually kuch nahi bolta, bas keyboard pe kaam karta rehta. But jab Meera kisi random issue pe irritate hoti, Aarav bina drama ke solution nikaal deta. Kabhi printer jam ho jaye, kabhi dashboard corrupt ho, kabhi koi file missing ho—Aarav quietly help karta, bina credit maange.
Ek din Meera ne coffee machine ke paas khade khade bola, “Tum itne calm kaise rehte ho?”
Aarav ne apna cup uthaya. “Coffee.”
“Serious answer?”
“Serious answer hai ki main unnecessarily react nahi karta.”
Meera hansi. “Wow. Main aur tum opposite species lagte hain.”
“Good. Office me variety important hoti hai.”
“Variety?” usne eyebrow raise ki. “That’s your flirting style?”
Aarav ne almost choke kar diya. “What? No.”
Meera ne grin chhupa li. “Relax. I was testing.”
Aarav ne uski taraf dekha. Us moment me un dono ke beech ek chhoti si silence bani, jo uncomfortable nahi thi. Bas soft thi. Jaise dono ko pata ho ki yeh conversation routine se thodi alag hai, par koi usko label nahi karega.
Us din ke baad office ka din thoda different lagne laga. Aarav ko morning me coffee pehle se zyada achhi lagti. Meera ko apne left side me kabhi-kabhi ek familiar presence ka ehsaas hota. Dono ke beech distance ab bhi cubicle ka hi tha, but attention ka distance kam ho gaya tha.
---
Kabir Mehta ko yeh sab notice karne me zyada time nahi laga. Kabir waise toh sabka dost tha. Har kisi ke saath lunch, har kisi ke saath joke, har kisi ke kaam me “help” ke naam pe thoda gossip. Open office me uski awaaz background music ki tarah chalti rehti thi.
Ek afternoon, jab Aarav aur Meera dono apne screens me ghuse hue the, Kabir unke beech se guzra aur casually bola, “Arre wah, new seating arrangement kaafi effective lag raha hai.”
Meera ne head lift kiya. “Kis cheez ke liye?”
Kabir ne innocent face banaya. “Productivity. Obviously.”
Aarav ko turant samajh aa gaya ki Kabir kuch aur imply kar raha hai. Meera bhi samajh gayi, isliye usne pen table pe tap kiya. “Kabir, tum kaam karo. Gossip ka KPI alag hota hai.”
Kabir hansa aur chala gaya, lekin jaate-jaate bol gaya, “Bas boundaries clear rakhna, yaar. Office hai, Bandra nahi.”
Meera ki smile thodi tight ho gayi. Aarav ne uski taraf dekha, phir apne screen pe nazar daali. Kabir ke words mazak me the, but unka effect real tha.
Office me log dekhte the. Office me log bolte the. Aur office me cheezein private rehna mushkil hoti thi.
Us din lunch ke baad Meera unusually quiet thi. Aarav ne notice kiya, but pucha nahi. Woh bhi apne andar ka hissa sambhal raha tha. Recent breakup ke baad usne kaafi time tak bas kaam ko apni life ka center banaya tha. Safe tha. Predictable tha. Par shayad thoda empty bhi.
---
Late evening tak office khaali hone laga. Lights thodi dim ho gayi, AC ki awaaz zyada clear sunai dene lagi, aur keyboards ka constant noise kam ho gaya. Kabir ek client call ke baad nikal chuka tha. Baaki log ya toh cab ke liye bhaag rahe the ya ghar ke liye.
Aarav apna laptop band karne hi wala tha ki usne dekha Meera ab bhi kaam kar rahi thi.
“Tum jaogi nahi?” usne poocha.
Meera ne screen se nazar nahi hatai. “Bas ek deck finish karna hai. Tum?”
“Main bhi nikal raha tha.”
“Then go,” she said. “Main thodi der aur ho jaungi.”
Aarav ruk gaya. “Need help?”
Meera ne pehli baar us evening uski taraf dekha. “Tum genuinely help offer kar rahe ho ya bas polite ho?”
“Dono.”
Woh hansi. “Okay, then help.”
Dono ke beech ek odd kind of quietness thi. Daytime wali banter gayab thi. Ab sirf office ki thandi hawa, monitor ki light, aur unke beech ki honesty thi.
Aarav ne uska deck dekhna start kiya. “This slide is overloaded.”
“Thanks, Captain Obvious.”
“Font too small.”
“Painfully true.”
“Also, yeh chart aur yeh paragraph same slide pe kyun hain?”
Meera ne sigh kiya. “Because our team likes suffering.”
Aarav ne pehli baar openly smile ki. Meera ne woh smile dekhi toh uska expression soft ho gaya. Kuch seconds baad woh boli, “Tum actually smile kar sakte ho.”
“Rarely.”
“Why?”
Aarav ne cursor stop kiya. “Habit.”
Meera ne usse force nahi kiya. Bas chair thodi piche ki aur boli, “Mujhe bhi habit hai—busy dikhne ki. So that no one asks if I’m tired.”
Aarav ne uski taraf dekha. “Are you?”
Meera ne ek halka sa laugh diya, jo thoda tired tha. “Haan. Bahut.”
Woh silence jo uske baad aayi, usme kuch heavy nahi tha. Bas sach tha. Meera ne apni chair se backrest pe head tikaya aur dheere se bola, “Main soch rahi thi Bangalore shift ho jaun. Ya remote role le lun. Yahan office politics aur burnout dono ne dimag kharab kar diya hai.”
Aarav ne kuch seconds liye. “You want to leave?”
“Pata nahi,” she admitted. “Maybe I want to run away. Maybe I want peace. Maybe I just want a life jahan har din kisi ke mood ke hisaab se survive na karna pade.”
Aarav ne monitor off kar diya. “That makes sense.”
Meera ne uski taraf dekha, almost surprised. “Bas itna?”
“Should I give a lecture?”
“Nahi. It’s just… people usually say ‘you’re so strong, you’ll manage.’”
Aarav shrugged. “Strong hone ka matlab yeh thodi hai ki thakne ka right nahi hai.”
Meera ne usko dekha, aur uski aankhon me pehli baar usne Aarav ko boring nahi, real dekha.
Phir Aarav ne dheere se bola, “Mera breakup hua tha kuch months pehle. Tab se I’ve been… stuck. Sab kuch routine pe chala diya. Office, coffee, cab, sleep. Bas. New seat mila toh pehle irritate hua. But…” Woh ruka. “I think I liked having something new around.”
Meera ki aankhen thodi soft ho gayin. “Yeh aapki office-friendly confession thi?”
Aarav ne half-smile diya. “Maybe.”
“Good.” She looked down for a second, then back up. “Because I liked it too. The new thing. The small conversations. Tumhara silent helpfulness. It made the day less exhausting.”
Aarav ka heart ek second ko aur loud ho gaya, jaise usne coffee zyada pee li ho.
---
Usi hafte Shalini Kapoor ne ek aur email bhej diya. Is baar subject line thi: “Seat Adjustments to Improve Collaboration.” Office me sabne padhte hi alag-alag reactions diye. Kisi ne sigh kiya, kisi ne joke maara, kisi ne already WhatsApp pe speculation start kar di.
Aarav ne apne inbox me dekha. Uska seat phir shift ho raha tha. Is baar thoda piche. Meera ka cubicle bhi change hota. Unke beech ka direct face-to-face arrangement khatam.
Aarav ko pehli baar genuinely bura laga.
Meera ne email padhkar bas itna kaha, “Wow. This office is committed to ruining my emotional stability.”
Aarav ne apna throat clear kiya. “Mine too.”
“Tumhe bhi?”
“Apparently.”
Kabir ne ye line sun li aur turant apni chair ghuma ke bola, “Aha. Emotional stability ki baat ho rahi hai? Very interesting.”
Meera ne usko ek look diya. “Kabir, please. Tumhari presence already enough drama hai.”
Kabir ne hands up kar diye. “Main toh bas observe kar raha hoon.”
Shalini usi waqt open office ke paas aayi. Uska face calm tha, jaise usko pata ho ke log uske decision se khush nahi honge. “Team dynamics improve karne ke liye thoda rearrangement kiya hai,” usne simple tone me kaha. “Kabhi-kabhi logon ko comfort zone se bahar nikalna padta hai.”
Aarav ko lag gaya ki yeh random nahi tha. Shalini notice karti thi. Stress bhi. Stagnation bhi. Shayad usne jaan-bujhkar proximity create ki thi, taaki team me communication better ho. Ya shayad usko bas lagta tha ki thoda sa movement bhi good for people ho sakta hai.
Meera ne Shalini ko dekha, phir Aarav ko. “Well, that was… suspiciously thoughtful.”
Shalini ne bas ek small nod diya aur chali gayi.
---
Us raat office me sirf Aarav aur Meera reh gaye the. Naye seat ka setup almost ho chuka tha, but packing still pending thi. Floor pe silence tha, aur city ki door se aati hum jaisi awaaz. Dono apne boxes ke paas khade the.
Aarav ne ek file uthate hue kaha, “Toh yeh ho gaya.”
Meera ne shoulder shrug kiya. “Temporary things end.”
“Yeah.”
Woh kuch pal chup rahe. Phir Aarav ne, jaise apne andar se himmat nikal ke, bola, “Mujhe laga seat change se bas routine disturb hoga. But honestly… I looked forward to seeing you every morning.”
Meera ne usse dekha. Is baar usne koi joke nahi maara. “Main bhi.”
Aarav ne breath li. “I know office me yeh complicated hai.”
“Very,” she agreed.
“Par jo chhote moments the… coffee machine pe, printer ke paas, late evenings… woh mere din ka best part ban gaye the.”
Meera ne apni fingers box ke edge pe rakh di. “Same. Aur main usually is type ki cheezon me believe nahi karti. But tum…” Woh thoda ruk gayi, phir softly boli, “Tum safe lagte ho. And not in a boring way. In a real way.”
Aarav ka chest tight sa ho gaya. “And you make everything less grey.”
Meera ne halka sa smile kiya. “That is the nicest office compliment I’ve ever got.”
Dono hansi nahi, bas smile kiya. Kyunki is pal me koi grand confession zaroori nahi tha. Na koi dramatic promise. Na koi filmi background music. Bas itna tha ki dono ne apni feelings ko naam diya, bina unhe force kiye.
Aarav ne dheere se kaha, “Maybe this doesn’t have to end at office.”
Meera ne usse dekha, aur uski aankhon me woh usual sharpness thi, par ab uske neeche ek decision tha. “Maybe not,” she said. “But I’m not running away just because life got messy. I need to figure out what I actually want. Bangalore, remote, yahan—whatever. I want to choose it properly.”
Aarav ne nod kiya. “That sounds like you.”
“Thanks. And you?”
“Main?” Aarav ne apna box uthaya. “Main pehli baar breakup ke baad kisi cheez ke liye excited feel kar raha hoon. Even if it’s just a coffee break.”
Meera ne uski taraf hand extend ki. “Then let’s not make it weird.”
Aarav ne uska haath shake kiya, but a little longer than necessary. “Too late.”
Meera hansi, and for the first time, Aarav ko laga ki office ka woh same floor, wahi same lights, wahi same cubicles, suddenly thode less suffocating ho gaye hain.
Different seats mil gayi thi. Same view ab bhi tha. Bas ab woh view empty nahi lagta tha.
Aur shayad isi ko fresh start kehte hain—jab life aapko force karke hilati hai, aur aapko pata chalta hai ki comfort zone ke bahar bhi kuch soft, honest, aur real mil sakta hai.
