Pandal Ke Parde Ke Peechhe

Pandal Ke Parde Ke Peechhe

Subah ka Kolkata apna hi mood hota hai. Lane mein fish market ki awaaz, cycle-rickshaw ki ghanti, aur balcony se aati chai aur tel-chawal ki mixed smell — sab milke ek aisa background banate hain jaise city ne abhi tak apni aankhen fully kholi hi na hon. Shreya Banerjee ko ye sab noise nahi, data lagta tha. Har cheez ka time, har kaam ka order, har emotion ka control. Uske bag mein notebook, highlighter, timetable, aur ek extra pen hamesha hota tha, kyunki “prepared rehna” uska personal religion tha.

Aur uske bilkul opposite bench par baithi thi Ananya Ghosh — sketchbook khula, pen ka cap missing, aur face pe woh expression jaise duniya uski jokes se hi chal rahi ho. Class mein teacher kuch bolte, toh Ananya ka ek side-eye enough hota tha poori class ko hila dene ke liye. Shreya usko pehle annoying samajhti thi. Ananya ko Shreya “walking Excel sheet” lagti thi. Dono ke beech friendship ka seedha route kabhi ban hi nahi sakta tha, bas university ke Durga Puja committee project ne unhe ek hi boat mein daal diya.

Project simple tha, bol toh simple hi rahe the: local lane ki “ghar-ghar ki stories” document karni hain, unhe ek community archive aur pandal installation mein convert karna hai. Mentor Mr. Sen ne apni moustache pe ungli phirate hue kaha tha, “Bachho, pandal sirf decoration nahi hota. Pandal memory hota hai. Jo lane bol nahi paati, woh yahan dikh jaati hai.” Ananya ne turant whisper kiya, “Sir full poetic mode mein aa gaye.” Shreya ne bina dekhe bola, “Bas kaam pe focus karo.”

Lekin fieldwork ne dono ka mood jaldi hi change kar diya. Pehle do-teen gharon mein logon ne politely baat ki, phir ek chhote se para mein unhe ek aisa ghar mila jahan mother aur daughter same roof ke neeche bhi strangers jaise behave kar rahi thi. Ghar ka naam tha Mukherjee bari, par andar ka mahaul cold storage jaisa tha. Mrs. Mukherjee ne darwaza kholke bas itna kaha, “Aao, but jaldi.” Andar unki beti, maybe Shreya se thodi badi, kitchen counter pe khadi thi, bina dekhe utensils arrange kar rahi thi. Na “kaise ho”, na “baitho”, bas silence ka ek mota layer.

Mr. Sen ne dheere se bola, “Yeh ghar pehle bada gaana-gaana wala tha. Ab dekho… sab chup.” Mrs. Mukherjee ne sun liya, par kuch boli nahi. Unki beti ne hansi ka ek dry sa sound nikala aur boli, “Sir, yahan bolne se kuch change nahi hota.” Shreya ko ajeeb sa uneasy feel hua. Ananya, jo normally har awkward moment ko joke mein tod deti thi, us din unusually quiet thi. Bas sketchbook mein usne us house ka doorway bana diya — ek closed frame, jisme se light aa rahi thi, but koi insaan nahi.

Uske baad unka project sirf interviews ka list nahi raha. Woh emotional archaeology ban gaya. Har ghar mein kuch na kuch aadha-suna hua, aadha-bhula hua, ya purposely hidden milne laga. Koi maa jo har waqt taut rehti thi kyunki usne apne husband ke office loss ke baad family ko sambhala tha. Koi father jo soft-spoken tha, par har baat “theek ho jayega” pe chhod deta tha. Koi daughter jo top karne ke baad bhi ghar mein invisible feel karti thi. Koi son jo bas “supportive” banne ke chakkar mein kabhi apni opinion de hi nahi paaya.

Shreya ka ghar bhi dheere-dheere uske samne alag shape mein dikhne laga. Uski Maa, Mrs. Banerjee, waise toh bahut practical thi. “Pehle padhai, phir drama,” unka standard line tha. Shreya ko lagta tha maa ko bas marks aur discipline se pyaar hai, usse nahi. Mr. Banerjee waise toh ghar mein the, par hamesha background music ki tarah — present, but not loud. Woh kabhi kisi side nahi lete the, bas bolte, “Arre, sab theek ho jayega.” Shreya ko ye line ghusse se zyada thaka deti thi.

Ananya ka ghar bhi kuch kam complicated nahi tha. Mrs. Ghosh tailoring ka kaam karti thi, subah se raat tak machines, customers, bills, aur family ka load. Unki tongue sharp thi, aur Ananya se unka conversation aksar fight ki form mein hota. “Tumhe kuch seriously lena aata hai?” “Seriously lene ke liye aap bhi toh kabhi softly bol diya karo, Maa,” Ananya ulta jawab deti. “Softly bolke ghar nahi chalta.” “Ha, aur harsh bolke love bhi nahi chalta.” Phir dono apne-apne room mein.

Project ke ek weekend pe Mr. Sen unhe ek purane para archive room mein le gaye. Wahan dust, old registers, aur kuch faded Puja committee records the. Panno ke beech ek letter nikla — torn edge wala, yellow paper, aur handwriting aisi jaise kisi ne roke hue aansu ke saath likha ho. Mr. Sen ne bina excitement ke kaha, “Is lane mein log yaad kam, chhupate zyada hain.” Letter Mrs. Banerjee ke naam tha. Shreya ne pehli line padhi aur uske haath kaanp gaye.

Us letter mein likha tha ki kaise Shreya ki Maa ne ek waqt pe apni higher studies aur ek old relationship ko chhod diya tha, kyunki family ko paison aur social pressure ke beech bachana tha. Unke father, yani Shreya ke Nanu se judi ek purani family crisis thi, jisme ghar ki izzat aur stability ko priority di gayi. Mrs. Banerjee ne kisi se complain nahi ki, kisi ko villain nahi banaya. Bas chup chaap sab sambhala. Aur usi silence ne unki personality ko hard bana diya. Shreya ke liye yeh shock tha. Jo maa usko emotionally distant lagti thi, woh actually apni poori life mein room for softness hi nahi bana paayi thi.
