Wrong Emoji
Aditi ne emoji bheja bhi nahi tha, bas galti se uski ungli ne poora rishta side me dhakel diya.
Late-night co-working office ki glass walls ke bahar Gurugram ki lights chamak rahi thi, aur andar Aditi apne laptop ke saamne aise baithi thi jaise koi final exam ka paper solve kar rahi ho. Uske desk pe half-finished cold coffee padi thi, phone silent mode pe tha, aur brain full-on active. Rohan ka last message screen pe blink kar raha tha: “Kal 7 baje? Coffee ya dinner? Meeting ke baad.”
Aditi ne reply socha tha simple-sa, cool-sa: “Coffee works. See you then 🙂” Bas itna hi. Normal. Casual. No overacting. No desperation. No try-hard vibes.
Lekin jaise hi usne emoji select karne ke liye keyboard khola, uski finger slip ho gayi. Aur send button dabte hi message chala gaya: “Coffee works. See you then 😏”
Aditi ka face freeze ho gaya.
“NO. NO, NO, NO,” usne whisper kiya, jaise phone uski baat sun ke message unsend kar dega. Usne screen ko ghur ke dekha, phir turant chat open ki, jaise emoji ko pakad ke wapas la sakti ho. Par WhatsApp ne koi mercy nahi dikhayi. Ek tick. Do tick. Blue ticks pending.
Uske dimaag me hazaar possibilities ek saath aane lage. Flirty lag raha tha? Arrogant? Mocking? Kya Rohan sochega ki woh jaan-boojh ke aisa bhej rahi hai? Kya usko lagega Aditi full-on flirt mode me hai? Ya worst case, woh soch lega ki Aditi uska mazaak uda rahi hai?
Aditi marketing executive thi, Gurugram ke ek co-working office me kaam karti thi, aur professionally brand tone, consumer insight, aur messaging nuance pe kaam karti thi. Irony dekho—dusron ke campaigns ka tone perfectly manage kar sakti thi, apni personal chat me ek emoji handle nahi hua.
Usne phone side me rakh diya, phir turant uthaya. Fir rakh diya. Fir uthaya. Screen pe Rohan ka name dekhte hi uske chest me ek weird sa pressure feel hua. Usko casual dikhna tha. Cool. Unbothered. Lekin sach yeh tha ki woh rejection se bahut darrti thi. Har message ke baad apne aap ko judge karti thi, jaise uski ek line se poori personality test ho rahi ho.
“Bas ek emoji hai,” usne khud se kaha. “Small mistake.”
Par Delhi-NCR mein small mistake kabhi kabhi full-ass situation ban jaati hai.
Rohan ka response aaya, aur usme warmth ka zero percent tha: “Interesting choice of emoji.”
Aditi ne screen dekh ke aankh band kar li. Interesting choice? Matlab woh notice kar gaya. Matlab woh confuse hai. Matlab woh judge kar raha hai. Matlab ab usko lag raha hoga ki Aditi deliberately weird signal de rahi hai.
Usne turant type kiya: “Arre nahi, galti se ho gaya. I meant simple smiley.”
Send karne se pehle usne padh ke dekha. “Arre nahi” thoda defensive lag raha tha. “Galti se ho gaya” almost guilty. “I meant simple smiley” jaise woh apni innocence prove kar rahi ho. Usne message delete kiya, fir dubara likha: “Lol typo. Meant 🙂”
Yeh thoda better tha. Thoda. Usne send kiya aur wait karne lagi.
Reply aane me 4 minute lage. Aditi ke liye 4 minute ka matlab tha 4 saal. Phone screen pe typing dots aaye, gaye, phir aaye, phir gayab. Finally message aaya: “Right. Cool.”
Bas. Do words. Full stop vibe. Aditi ko laga jaise uske stomach me koi chhota sa stone gir gaya ho.
“Cool?” usne whisper kiya. “Sirf cool?” Uske mind ne turant worst-case scenario build kar liya. Rohan ab soch raha hai ki woh fake cool hai. Ya attention seek kar rahi hai. Ya awkwardly flirt kar rahi hai. Ya—sabse bura—usey irritating lag rahi hai.
Uske side desk pe baithi Meera Kapoor, jo Noida se commute karke aati thi aur office mein Aditi ki lunch-buddy thi, apne tiffin se rajma chawal nikaal rahi thi. Meera 31 ki thi, practical, straightforward, aur itni honest ki kabhi kabhi log uncomfortable ho jaate the. Uske love life me khud confusion ka permanent subscription tha, phir bhi sabko advice dene me uska confidence alag level ka tha.
“Tu phir se us WhatsApp villain ko stare kar rahi hai?” Meera ne bina dekhe poocha.
Aditi ne phone lock kar diya. “Kis villain?”
“Jo bhi hai, uski wajah se tera face aise ho gaya hai jaise GST notice aa gaya ho.”
Aditi ne ek long breath li. “Maine galti se wrong emoji bhej diya.”
Meera ne ek spoon pause karke Aditi ko dekha. “Bas?”
“Bas? Meera, ‘😏’ hai.”
“Achha,” Meera ne serious tone mein kaha, “toh phir ya toh flirt hai, ya sarcasm hai, ya tu kisi ko subtly threaten kar rahi hai. Context ke bina dangerous hai.”
Aditi ne forehead pe haath rakha. “Maine threaten nahi kiya!”
“Texting mein log bahut kuch threaten kar dete hain, Aditi. Delhi-NCR ka DNA hi yeh hai. Ek full stop bhi passive-aggressive lagta hai.”
Aditi ko hasna chahiye tha, par woh aur tense ho gayi. “Maine usko clarify bhi kiya. Ab woh short reply de raha hai.”
Meera ne rajma chawal ka ek bite liya. “Toh tu aur explain mat kar.”
“Par agar woh galat samajh raha hai—”
“Let him sit with it,” Meera interrupted. “Har message ka matlab nahi hota. Kabhi kabhi context hota hai. Aur kabhi kabhi log bas overthink karte hain.”
Aditi ne usko ghur ke dekha. “Tu meri side le rahi hai ya mere against?”
“Main reality ki side le rahi hoon.”
Aditi ne phone uthaya, par chat dobara kholne se darr rahi thi. Rohan ka last message wahi thanda-sa tha. Usne socha, maybe he’s busy. Maybe meeting me hoga. Maybe he’s not into this. Maybe the emoji really did ruin everything.
Par sach yeh tha ki Rohan bhi apne side pe kuch aur hi soch raha tha.
South Delhi ki ek advertising agency me creative lead hone ki wajah se Rohan words ke beech ka matlab padhne ka aadat wala aadmi tha. Sarcastic tha, observant tha, aur thoda guarded bhi. Log usey emotionally detached samajhte the, kyunki woh har situation mein ek half-smile aur one-liner ke saath nikal jaata tha. Lekin validation ke liye woh bhi sensitive tha, bas dikhata nahi tha.
Usne Aditi ka emoji dekha aur turant assume kar liya ki ya toh woh flirt kar rahi hai, ya mazaak uda rahi hai, ya phir deliberately mixed signal de rahi hai. Aur honestly, uska ego thoda hurt hua.
“Interesting choice of emoji,” usne reply kiya tha, lekin uske andar ka thought zyada brutal tha: Really? Is this how she’s playing it?
Usne Aditi ko no-nonsense, smart, slightly nervous but nice samjha tha. Ab suddenly uski tone suspicious lag rahi thi. Usne decide kiya ki woh unnecessary enthusiasm nahi dikhayega. Agar Aditi serious hai, toh theek. Agar nahi, toh woh bhi cool rahega.
Problem yeh thi ki dono cool rehne ke chakkar mein aur awkward ho gaye.
Agli subah Aditi office pahunchi toh uska mood already low tha. She had dressed carefully—off-white shirt, straight hair, minimal makeup—because she wanted to feel composed. Image-conscious hona uski second nature thi. Logon ko uska polished version dikhana usko safe lagta tha. Real self me rejection ka darr zyada tha.
Lunch ke time Meera ne usse bola, “Tu usko over-explain mat karna. Ek emoji ke liye itna court case mat bana.”
Aditi ne salad ka fork ghumaya. “Par agar usne interest lose kar diya toh?”
Meera ne ek look diya. “Aditi, agar ek emoji se interest lose ho gaya, toh interest pehle se fragile tha.”
Aditi ne kuch bola nahi. Kyunki yeh baat hurt bhi kar rahi thi aur true bhi lag rahi thi.
Us din Rohan office ke kaam me busy tha, par Aditi ka message dimaag se nikal nahi raha tha. Usne meeting ke bahane reply delay kiya, phir lunch pe bhi nahi kiya. Usko lag raha tha ki agar woh zyada engage karega toh woh khud vulnerable ho jayega. Aur woh vulnerability ko professionally bhi aur personally bhi avoid karta tha.
Sham ko Aditi ne coffee machine ke paas usko dekha. Office café area me light thodi warm thi, log apne laptops ke saath scattered the, aur background me espresso machine ki hiss sunai de rahi thi. Rohan black shirt mein khada tha, one hand pocket me, dusre se paper cup pakde hue. Usne Aditi ko dekha aur ek polite smile di—jaise dono bas colleagues ho, aur kal raat ka weird text ek technical glitch tha.
Aditi ne bhi smile kiya, lekin dono ke beech hawa me ek invisible wall thi.
“Hey,” Aditi boli.
“Hey,” Rohan ne jawab diya.
Silence.
Phir Rohan ne cup ko dekhte hue kaha, “Meeting prep done?”
“Almost,” Aditi ne kaha. “Bas last slide pending hai.”
“Good.”
Phir phir silence.
Aditi ko laga uski chest me koi knot tight ho raha hai. Itna awkward face-to-face interaction usne tab feel nahi kiya tha jab uska ex usko “we need to talk” bolke ghost ho gaya tha. Ab ek emoji ka damage usko usse bhi zyada lag raha tha.
Rohan ne finally bola, “Kal wala message… I wasn’t sure what to make of it.”
Aditi ka heart ek second ke liye ruk gaya. “I know. It was a typo.”
“Yeah,” Rohan said, eyes still not fully meeting hers. “But… it looked intentional.”
Aditi ne hansi ki koshish ki, par voice halki hil gayi. “Intentional? Rohan, main bas stupid ho gayi thi.”
Woh pehli baar uski taraf directly dekha. “I thought maybe you were making fun of me.”
Aditi blinked. “What? Why would I do that?”
“Because people do that. Especially when they want to stay casual but also keep the door open.” His tone dry tha, but uske words ke neeche insecurity chhupi thi.
Aditi ko suddenly samajh aaya ki uska emoji sirf emoji nahi tha. Rohan ne usme woh sab padh liya tha jo woh actually feel karne se darr rahi thi—flirting, hesitation, mixed signals. Aur woh khud bhi usko reject hone se bachane ke liye over-cautious tha.
Usne slowly kaha, “Maine bas 🙂 bhejna tha. But I was trying to look… you know… effortless.”
Rohan ne ek chhota sa laugh kiya. “Effortless log usually message bhejne se pehle 17 baar delete nahi karte.”
Aditi ka face garam ho gaya. “Tumhe kaise pata?”
“Because I do the same.”
Yeh sunkar Aditi ne pehli baar usko properly dekha. Rohan ka sarcastic armor thoda crack hua tha. Woh bhi validation ke liye sensitive tha. Woh bhi assumptions bana raha tha. Woh bhi scared tha ki kahin woh extra interested na lag jaye.
Usne thoda sa saans liya. “Actually, mujhe laga tum bas uninterested ho. Isliye main aur explain nahi kar rahi thi.”
Rohan ne eyebrow raise ki. “Uninterested? Aditi, I was literally trying not to sound eager.”
Ab dono ko ek saath hansi aa gayi. Not loud. Bas woh relieved si laugh, jo awkwardness ke neeche dab ke aakhir nikalti hai.
“तो,” Aditi said, switching into half-teasing mode, “poora drama ek emoji ki wajah se?”
Rohan nodded. “And our inability to ask simple questions like normal adults.”
“Wow,” Aditi said, “that’s actually insulting.”
“Correct,” he replied, and this time his smile was real.
Us pal Aditi ko realize hua ki problem emoji nahi thi. Problem yeh thi ki dono apne dimaag me story likh rahe the—without checking the facts. Ek chhota sa wrong emoji unki insecurity ka magnifying glass ban gaya tha. Usne uski image-consciousness ko expose kar diya, aur Rohan ki guarded nature ko bhi.
Woh dono café ke corner me khade the, office ke noise ke beech, aur suddenly it felt less like a misunderstanding and more like a mirror.
Aditi ne softly kaha, “Mujhe impress karne ka pressure tha. Isliye over-casual banne ki koshish ki. Aur obviously, fail ho gayi.”
Rohan ne cup ko side me shift kiya. “For the record, you didn’t fail. You just sent the wrong emoji.”
Aditi rolled her eyes. “Same thing in Delhi, apparently.”
Rohan laughed. “Not same. But close enough to create unnecessary trauma.”
Aditi smiled, then her expression turned honest. “And I’m sorry if I made you feel weird.”
He nodded once. “I’m sorry too. I should’ve just asked instead of assuming.”
That was the real reveal. Emoji ka meaning second priority tha. First priority yeh tha ki dono ne apni fear-driven reading se baat ko toxic bana diya tha. A small slip had become a silent distance because both of them were more comfortable with interpretation than clarity.
Next day, Aditi ne Rohan ko ek message bheja. Is baar usne 10 baar check kiya, phir bhi simple rakha: “Coffee this evening? No hidden meaning, I promise. Just coffee. 🙂”
Rohan ka reply aaya within a minute: “Good. Because I’m terrible at decoding. Coffee at 7.”
Aditi smiled at her phone, this time without panic. She didn’t need to look cool. Bas clear hona enough tha.
Meera ne usko dekh ke kaha, “Haan, ab chehra theek lag raha hai. Kya hua?”
Aditi ne phone lock karte hue kaha, “Nothing. Bas message ka matlab nahi, context matter karta hai.”
Meera snorted. “Maine bola tha na.”
Aditi laughed. “Haan, madam. Aap hi sahi thi.”
“Of course I was. Main Noida se commute karti hoon. Mujhe life ka practical version pata hai.”
That evening, Aditi and Rohan met at a small café near Cyber Hub. No grand confession. No dramatic music. Bas sahi timing, sahi words, aur thodi honesty. They talked about work, traffic, bad coffee, and how texting had made them both unnecessarily suspicious. The conversation felt lighter because neither of them was pretending to be cooler than they were.
Aur Aditi ne ek cheez finally seekh li: digital tone kabhi kabhi real emotions ko distort kar deti hai. Emoji, punctuation, timing—sab kuch meaning badal sakta hai. Par agar insaan honest ho, toh confusion kam ho jaati hai.
Rohan ne bhi seekh liya ki assumptions se zyada communication matter karti hai. Aur yeh bhi ki kabhi kabhi jo person guarded lagta hai, woh bas ek clear question ka wait kar raha hota hai.
Woh relationship us raat magically define nahi hua. But it got a real beginning.
Aur Aditi ke liye, yeh enough tha.
