Mrs Suri almost smiled.
Tanya received the position provisionally, subject to the new academic term. She wanted to tell the group immediately and hesitated because celebration still felt fragile.
Then she recognised the old habit.
Coordinator role offered, she wrote. I am excited and terrified. Please respond without analysis for five minutes.
Meher sent celebration graphics. Rhea sent twelve exclamation marks. Naina asked salary only after the five-minute period expired.
They met that evening for dessert. The occasion belonged entirely to Tanya, not Kabir or repair.
“Speech,” Rhea demanded.
Tanya raised her spoon. “Thank you for complying with limited analysis.”
“Time expired,” Naina said. “What is increase?”
Laughter arrived without effort.
Meher then shared that she had accepted the regional campaign role. Naina revealed she had scheduled apartment viewings. Rhea admitted she wanted to apply for a position at another firm but feared losing status.
The four women had concealed good news along with romantic trouble. Repair meant creating room for ambition too.
They agreed on a monthly dinner where nobody could say “nothing new” without considering whether privacy had become avoidance.
The rule was impossible to enforce and useful to remember.
On the way home, Tanya passed a florist displaying yellow daisies. She thought of Kabir’s school bouquet and did not enter. The memory remained pleasant; the boundary remained firm.
At home, she placed the coordinator letter beside the envelope containing his key. One object represented a door closing. The other represented a door she had opened herself.
The road back belonged to the women. Kabir’s road, if it existed, would have to begin elsewhere.
